In early 2006, Westmeath Community Development, Westmeath County Council, Athlone Community Taskforce and The Westmeath Community and Voluntary Forum were successful in their request to the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs for funding of a project to set up a Volunteer Centre for County Westmeath.

In May, Ian O’Flynn joined the project as it’s coordinator and over the summer months, with the support of the Steering Committee completed much of the groundwork and policy creation in preparation for the establishment of the Westmeath Volunteer Centre.

Westmeath Volunteer Centre is a member of Volunteer Centres Ireland.

 

A database of all groups and volunteers in Westmeath has been put together and many volunteers have called Ian to register their availability.

On his reception from communities Ian has met, he said “The response and feedback I have received so far has been fantastic but not very surprising as it is already quite obvious how many people volunteer their time in Westmeath, However, the centre is about more than just sourcing and placing volunteers, it’s about sustaining their interest and helping groups prepare and grow in their interactions with Volunteers”
